Wool Tapestry

c. 1960

Decorative tapestry in the style of the Escola Catalana del Tapís, a movement that emerged around the Casa Aymat in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a key center in the renewal of Catalan textile art during the second half of the 20th century. Under the impetus of Josep Grau-Garriga, the tapestry ceased to be understood as a simple decorative surface and became a plastic, material object, and sometimes almost sculptural.

The piece embodies this renewing spirit through a composition of great tactile richness, organized from stripes, woven modules, knots, fringes, and textile volumes. The warm range of ochres, earth tones, oranges, browns, and cream tones reinforces its organic character, while the different fiber densities create a lively surface with a strong mural presence.

Its interest lies precisely in this combination of craftsmanship, material, and contemporary language. Without abandoning textile tradition, the tapestry here acquires an autonomous plastic dimension, close to the experimental environment that made Sant Cugat one of the fundamental centers of modern tapestry in Catalonia.
