Pair of Torres Clavé Armchairs

In 1934, the architect Josep Torres Clavé designed the GATCPAC or Torres Clavé armchair as part of the furniture for the Spanish Republic Pavilion designed by Josep Lluís Sert at the 1937 International Exposition in Paris, where works such as Pablo Picasso's Guernica and others by Alexander Calder and Joan Miró were also exhibited. 

The design is inspired by the traditional Ibizan chair-making of popular origin, which Torres Clavé reinterpreted from a rationalist perspective. These pieces are part of the first editions by the Catalan publisher Mobles 114, made of cherry wood and woven esparto grass.

An armchair that, due to its functional and aesthetic qualities and its particular history, has become an icon of modern Spanish design.
